National Rifle Association TV host Grant Stinchfield sent out a now deleted tweet last week in the midst of the North Korea nuclear crisis that read: “Let’s send a note to North Korea that Sacramento changed its name to Guam!”
As expected, Stinchfield received lots of criticism for his comment and was forced to walk back his tweet saying, “It was meant as a joke and I regret it.”
Stinchfield isn’t the only
right wing asshole Republican who’s walked back insensitive comments by claiming it was just a “joke”. Just last week, our own President remarked that he was “happy” that Russian leader Putin was expelling American diplomats because we we would save money on payroll and then later claimed it was a “joke” after folks were outraged.
Frankly, I don’t think these were jokes. Stinchfield himself had just attacked Trump-criticizing liberals on his show saying that “there is nothing funny about an attack on America.”
But even if Stinchfield and the President’s remarks were meant to be jokes, they really need to stop because they’re just not funny. In fact, let me make a broad, sweeping statement: Republicans just aren’t funny and they should leave the jokes to the professionals i.e. all the snowflake liberals.
Just look at someone like Dennis Miller–he was hilarious on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE when he was raging liberal, but later when he became a right wing asshole, it’s as if all the funny in his body got sucked out into the big black GOP hole.
There’s a number of reasons for this, but I think mainly it comes down to this: to be really funny, you need to be able to look at the world from different perspectives. You need to be self-reflective. You need to be both critical of and open to different positions. You need to be sensitive to pain–your own and that of others. You need to be able to examine and understand something from every angle and pov. And you need to have empathy. There’s no fucking way someone like Trump who thinks the universe revolves around him or some right wing douche who doesn’t even believe facts like climate change is real is going to be any of those things.
So Republicans, please just stop trying to make jokes ’cause you’re just not funny and all it does is cause these “misunderstandings” that’s just a waste of everyone’s time.
Actually, I take part of what I said back. Republicans can be funny. But it’s NEVER intentional. Exhibit A:
