DOCTORS & ENGINEERS
– LOS ANGELES SOUTH ASIAN-AMERICAN GARAGE PUNK BAND – TO RELEASE DEBUT EP “*FROM A GOOD FAMILY” ON NOV 12 (GOOD FAMILY RECORDS)
On November 12, 2016, Doctors & Engineers will release “*From a Good Family” (Good Family Records), an energetic debut album that celebrates South Asian diasporic experience in America by re-imagining “Desi” film and folk songs as psychedelic, garage punk, alongside originals inspired by the band’s own hyphenated identities. Mishthi Music, a blog about South Asian diasporic music, premiered their hard-hitting punk tribute to vintage Bollywood, “Karle Pyar Karle (Love Imperative)” on the “Good Girls Marry Doctors” mixtape as a must-hear “voice of South Asian female rebellion.”
Doctors & Engineers is Sri Panchalam on vocals, Jayson Joseph on guitar, Azeem Khan on keys and synth, Sumi Dave on drums, and Scott Okamoto on bass. Comprised of five songs in four languages – Tamil, Gujarati, Hindi, and English – the EP ranges from psychedelic prog rock such as the band’s original, “Resident Alien,” to raucous, folk-instinctive metalcore such as “Mahisagar Ni Aare (The Mahisagar Swing).” The EP was produced by Los Angeles punk veteran, David O. Jones (Alice Bag, The Deadbeats, Carnage Asada) direct-to-tape at Wasatch Studios, for a warm and gritty, analog sound reminiscent of the American 60’s and 70’s.
“At its core, Doctors & Engineers is a project about centering South Asian diversity and self-determination, and countering the ‘Bollywood and bhindis’ model minority narrative that is projected upon our communities in America. Even within our four South Asian- American band members, there are so many complexities in language, life histories, food, culture, religion, arts, and more, but that doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of ‘who are’ South Asians in American diaspora,” said frontwoman Sri Panchalam.
The EP will be available for donation-based digital download on Nov. 12 on Bandcamp and for sale in limited hard copy at the band’s record release party. The record release party will be upstairs at Grand Star Jazz Club in LA’s Chinatown on Nov. 12 at 7PM with bands El Haru-Kuroi, King Kang, and the DJ’s of Discostan, each led by tenacious women of color from the Asian and Latino immigrant diaspora in Los Angeles. The band is planning to tour the U.S. in 2017 in support of the EP. More details will be announced soon.
