Tragic news out of Florida: Bangladesh American store-owner Ayub Ali was shot and killed during a robbery on Tuesday. What makes this story even more devastating is that Ali was the father of 16-year-old Elama Ali, who along with her brother, were survivors of the Parkland shooting in February.

The 61-year old Ali was the owner of Aunt Molly’s Food Store in North Lauderdale. On Tuesday afternoon, a man robbed Ali at gunpoint, took money from the register, but then returned and fatally shot him.

After the Parkland shooting that took seventeen lives, Elama said her father encouraged her gun control activism and gave his blessing for his daughter to attend the “March for our Lives” rally in Washington, DC this spring.

“He took me where I wanted to go,” Elama said. “When in was in Washington, he asked about it. He watched it on TV.”

No arrest has yet been made in the case.

“We’re trying to be strong, but it’s overwhelming,” Elama said.
