Western companies apparently need to do a little more research when it comes to marketing to the Maori community. Recently, we had ‘Māori Tears’ from Belgium and now there’s this from Coca-Cola:
On one of their New Zealand vending machines, the company wrote “Kia Ora, Mate!” which literally translates to “Hello, death!”
“Kia ora” is commonly translated as “hello” in Maori, while “mate” can be used as “buddy” in English. But in Maori, “mate” is a word that is associated with “death.”

Considering how obesity is a leading killer in the world and 50% of Maoris in New Zealand are considered obese, maybe this isn’t a mistake after all.
“Hello, death” indeed.
