Eleven Year-old Kamilla (Simone Baker) helps out Eli (Justin Chon) and Daniel (David So) during a busy day at the shoe store in a scene from the film GOOK – A FILM BY Justin Chon.

Justin Chon’s Sundance and LA Asian Pacific Film Festival award winning film GOOK, set during the ’92 LA Uprising, is finally coming out in theaters on August 18 (first in Los Angeles, and more cities after LA).

Samuel Goldwyn Films has just released a clip from the film, which you can see above. Here is the official synopsis for the film:

GOOK follows Eli and Daniel, two Korean American brothers that run their late father’s shoe store in a predominantly African American community of Los Angeles. These two brothers strike up a unique and unlikely friendship with an 11-year-old African American girl, Kamila. As Daniel dreams of becoming a recording artist and Eli struggles to keep the story afloat, racial tensions build to a breaking point in L.A. as the “infamous” L.A. Riots break out.

We’ve written extensively about this amazing film and are excited for Justin Chon, who totally deserves all the accolades he’s received over the past few months. GOOK is a worthy addition to not only Asian American cinema, but American indie cinema in general.

So go out and support this film when it comes out in a theater near you.
