I know there are a lot of people who’ve criticized Yoko Ono for everything from breaking up the Beatles to ruining her husband John Lennon’s career. I’ve always found those criticisms to be rooted in racism and sexism.

I haven’t always been Ono’s biggest fan, but she’s a talented artist in her own right who’s produced some interesting work and doesn’t always get the recognition she deserves. So I’m all for the National Music Publishers Association’s decision to award Ono a songwriting credit on arguably Lennon’s most popular song–“Imagine”.

At the NMPA’s annual meeting yesterday, CEO David Israelite showed a video from 1980 wherein Lennon said that Ono deserved a songwriting credit for “Imagine” because of her influence and inspiration on it. Israelite announced he has started the process to add Ono to the song as a co-writer and is hopeful it will be approved.

I hope so too.
