So I am curious as to what y’all think of this case. Yale University Pierson College Dean June Chu is has caused outrage with her Yelp reviews. The one review she made which has caused the biggest controversy is where she labeled customers at a local restaurant as WHITE TRASH. Here is the review word for word about a local Japanese steakhouse:

“If you are white trash, this is the perfect night out for you!”

She has since been put on leave, with public outrage online calling for her to resign or be sacked. She has also since made a public apology when her reviews were circulating around Yale. This is what she said (via NBC News):

“There are no two ways about it. Not only were they insensitive in matters related to class and race; they demean the values to which I hold myself and which I offer as a member of this community.”

Pierson College Head Stephen Davis, sent an email on Thursday to all the residential members of the College that (via NBC News):

Chu had been placed on leave after he discovered there were numerous “reprehensible posts,” not the two he had been led to believe existed.

Davis, who is in charge of the college’s administration, said that review and another that described movie theater workers as “barely educated morons” were “deeply harmful to the community fabric.”

He said he discovered on Saturday night that there were other “reprehensible posts” that represented a more widespread pattern, compounded the harm of the first two and damaged his trust in Chu and her ability to lead the college.

“Let me be clear,” he wrote. “No one, especially those in trusted positions of educating young people, should denigrate or stereotype others, and that extends to any form of discrimination based on class, race, religion, age, disability, gender identity, or sexual orientation.”

My take on this is that, I think Chu is a lot more “classist” than a racist… she also appears to be very judgmental in terms of how she classified customers as low class hence the use of the term “white trash”. If she used that term to call someone who was racist or discriminatory towards her or others, I would probably have more sympathy for her… but this seems to be pretty unprovoked…

I don’t know, what do y’all think?

  1. She’s more racist towards Chinese than anyone. it’s that self hate. Who cares what ethnicity the sushi chef is? Can they properly make your food? That should be the only question that matters.

  2. “White trash” is not a slur. Nor is it discriminatory nor racist.

  3. flaneury, what is the logical connection between her pointing out the Chinese nationality of the employees of a Japanese restaurant and racism and self-hatred? While I agree that if any person cares to master the cuisine of a culture they should not be prohibited from making it or from working in any establishment, there is no logical connection between her statement and racism against Chinese or self-hatred.

  4. Jaz Spa, reading comprehension isn’t your strong point. I already said very clearly why pointing out the ethnicity of the sushi chef is racist. I shouldn’t even have to since it’s obvious. Anyone with a brain knows that you don’t have to be Japanese to be a good sushi chef. She clearly criticized the restaurant for hiring Chinese rather than Japanese chefs. That’s self hatred.
