“Tura Thursday” is a regular series celebrating the legacy of the late, great Tura Satana, best known as Varla in the 1965 Russ Meyer cult classic Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!. This series is curated by Tura’s longtime manager, friend, confidant and CEO of Tura Satana Productions, Siouxzan Perry.

Most of Tura’s fans know that she passed on February 4th (2011), however, many don’t know that this is also my birthday… Remembering Tura on my birthday…is bittersweet. Her leaving the planet 7 years ago this week… turned my world upside down yet, bonded us together for eternity.

Tura was a beautiful, powerful force of nature and this can be seen again and again in the many images we have in our archives and some which emerge even today. This week, I am posting three such photos to celebrate Tura’s life and my friendship with her.

I find it remarkable how Tura was captured by Russ Meyer in his portrait of her taken while filming Faster Pussycat Kill Kill in 1965, to be recaptured in a similar pose by the extraordinary US photographer Austin Young, 30 years later later. Both portraits reconcile a tough, breathtakingly stunning Varla with a vulnerable yet powerful Tura. Aspects of her which live on today in her legacy and in the hearts of her family and friends.

We are determined to catch this very essence of Tura in our documentary. And we are well on the way to doing so.

In the meantime, here’s the third photo:
