Oh hey, here is another example of white people making videos on Asian food thinking they know how to eat it without any consideration that their methods may be wrong and effed up. Remember the whole Bon Appetit fiasco last year and the whitesplaining on how to eat pho by Chef Taylor Akin? And the controversy it caused? Well Time Out in London has done the exact same thing in making an extremely cringe worthy video about how they think Shanghainese soup dumplings (xiaolongbao) should be eaten and many Asians online have lost their shit over it – because the method Time Out showed has disrespected the traditional ways of eating this delicious morsel of flavour. Also it somehow managed to make xiaolongbao some new “trendy” thing to eat when many of us Asians have been eating it for yonks – so what the eff?

I almost vomited seeing how the cringe worthy video shows you to poke and tear the dumplings so that it “explodes” and the soup seeps out of the dumpling skin onto your plate/bowl, and stupidly even compared the explosion to popping zits…. uh huh…. uh huh…

Just check out the anger – and yes to Asian power! So what was Time Out’s response to all this hoo ha? Well they kind of gave a sorry not sorry type apology and asked people to steer them into the right direction….

After our recent video on Chinese dumplings, we’ve been politely informed that bursting these lovely little parcels of culinary joy before they reach your lips really isn’t the done thing at all.

So, first off, apologies to anybody who was peeved by our post. Secondly, we’d like to invite the knowledgeable food-lovers of China and Asia to tell us what traditional delicacies we Londoners should try – and how to eat them properly. We’re an inquisitive bunch at heart you know, and while we don’t always do things the traditional way, we’re always looking to learn.

So please, do us a favour and give us a steer on what to chow on next by adding a comment or two below. We’ll publish the best suggestions. Thank you!

But I think the issue is they are getting too many white people to work for them and lack of diversity is a cause of this whitesplaining… well… let’s hope this is the last time we see shit like that.

And here is the correct way of eating and respecting the xiaolongbao (soup dumplings)..
