If you’ve kept up with our social media, you already know we’ve been working hard during our winter vacation—shooting our YouTube adaptation of my fellow Offender David Henry Hwang’s (DHH) acclaimed play Yellow Face (winner of the OBIE and a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Best Drama).

Yellow Face is about an Asian American playwright named DHH (Ryun Yu) who casts Marcus (Christopher Gorham), a Caucasian actor, in his new show after mistakenly believing Marcus is part Asian. An entertaining mix of fact and fiction that defies any easy categorization, we thought the play would be an interesting work to adapt for YouTube. The rest of the distinguished cast includes a mix of veterans and newbies from film, TV, theater and YouTube: Linda Park, Sab Shimono, Emily Kuroda, Justin James Hughes, Ki Hong Lee, Tracy Winters and Michael Krawic (plus a few special cameos).

While there is a long history of film adaptations of plays and “filmed” theatrical productions that have been posted on YouTube, as far as I know, no one has attempted to do what we’re trying to undertake with our adaptation. It’s neither a filmed play nor is it a “realistic” adaptation of the work. It’s a hybrid/mash-up of theatrical, film and YouTube styles courtesy of the vision of director Jeff Liu—taking place on a stage like a play, but using the language of film and video to tell the story in a stylized way that’s unique to YouTube.

Whether this approach will work or not remains to be seen when Yellow Face premieres on the YOMYOMF Network later this year, but this was in many ways the perfect way to end the year and kick off a new one. Tackling an ambitious project in a uniquely creative way and taking risks is what I hope defines what YOMYOMF is and as we enter 2013, that spirit of experimentation and risk-taking is one we will continue to embrace. But in the meantime, check out some of the great pics from the shoot below courtesy of photographers Ozum Bobaroglu and Steven Lam.

Happy new year, everyone!
