I’m not looking forward to much else these days. Like most decent people, I hope for impeachment and removal from office before the end of his first term in 2020. But let’s posit for a moment that doesn’t happen, somehow we don’t all die, and America regains its sense enough to vote in someone besides Trump in 2020. In the meantime, as a means of hopefully-harmless distraction, a slew of Marvel things are gonna come out, with an increasing contingent of Asian superpeople to watch for. Notably, most of them are women (for some reason, Asian dudes are more present in the DC Universe shows, but I digress).

This list may not be a comprehensive. Ideally, it isn’t! Please let me know what/whom I’ve missed. Perhaps many POC casting announcements will come in whatever time it takes to get rid of this fucking president. (Btw, the header image of Ms. Marvel punching Führer Trump was created by illustrator Matt Stefani.)

The Gifted (September 2018)

The X-Men spinoff just kicked off its second season. Jamie Chung’s Blink continues the well-advised racebent casting of Blink.

Venom (October 2018)

Riz Ahmed as Riot, whom I gather is the anti-hero’s anti-villain? I don’t follow the Venomverse, honestly.

Daredevil S3 (October 2018)

If Elektra (Elodie Yung) doesn’t come back in some form, I’m eating my sai.

Runaways S2 (December 2018)

Nico Minoru (Lyrica Okano) continues her quest to find out why her mom was edited out of the DR. STRANGE film.

Into the Spider-Verse (December 2018)

Peni Parker (voiced by Kimiko Glenn) definitely seems coded anime-style (she’s the one with the mecha-spider-robot suit, as far as I know) but remember that we could still have a first Asian Spider-Woman in SILK, because of alternate universes! Alternate universes make everything possible, as this trailer cleverly illustrates, using french fries.

Captain Marvel (March 2019)

Gemma Chan appears as Minn-Erva, part of Captain Mar-Vell’s squad from that planet where words are just like English words except spelled Diph-Rynt Lee.

Avengers 4 (May 2019)

Presumably, the Avengers solve the whole mess by time-warping back to the battle on Titan for a do-over, in which Mantis sedates Thanos, Wong appears and uses that HIGHLY USEFUL portal-disc trick to amputate the hand with the Infinity Gauntlet, while Drax holds Star-Bro back from messing up the whole plan. Thus the Asian Marvel heroes save the day, as I totally predicted.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix (June 2019)

Are Lana Condor or Olivia Munn in this one? IMDB suggests they are not. Too bad, because in the vein of the above-mentioned all-Asian-Avengers coup, Psylocke and Jubilee together are the X-People’s best shot at taking out Dark Phoenix; Psylocke’s got the psychic powers, and Jubilee’s sort of the anti-Dark Phoenix with her sparkly exploding twitter-birds.

Spider-Man: Far From Home (July 2019)

Not sure who might be in the the next Spider-Man, but perhaps Ned (Jacob Batalon) and Cindy Moon (Tiffany Espensen) survived Thanos’ snap?

Agents of SHIELD (Summer 2019)

Chloe Bennet and Ming-Na continue their long-running roles as Quake and Melinda May. The show’s final season will be delayed, presumably because its storyline relates to events in AVENGERS 4.

New Mutants (August 2019)

I would be rooting for this X-team except somehow they did not include freakin’ KARMA. Karma is like, THE New Mutant. If this one gets cancelled altogether, all I can say is, karma’s a bitch.

Punisher S2 (2019)

I don’t know if there will be any prominent Asian characters in the next season of Punisher, but I assume if there are, Punisher will shoot them.

Cloak and Dagger S2 (2019?)

Little is known about the follow-up season so far (the premiere episode will be directed by Jennifer Phang), but perhaps Ally Maki will reprise her role as Mina? And perhaps America will restore its status as a semi-functional democracy?

New Warriors (2018? TBA)

The current status of this show’s debut is unclear, but it’s got Matthew Moy as Microbe! Microbe’s superpower is probably as gross as it sounds, but I’m here for it. MAKE MINE MICROBE.

Iron Fist/Daughters of the Dragon? S3 (unconfirmed)

This would be the truly gratifying coup, if Colleen Wing assumed the Iron Fist mantle for real and we get to forget about Danny’s storyline entirely. (Or they re-conceived the series to star Colleen and Misty Knight under whatever goofy team name they can get away with: Daughters of the Dragon? Heroes for Hire? Night-Wing? The Better Defenders?)

I assume Randall Park’s SHIELD agent Jimmy Woo will cameo in one of these, ‘cause those SHIELD agents are everywhere.

Marvel promises three as-yet-unconfirmed feature films in 2020, at which point, one hopes, the Trump administration will be post-toast. Educated guesses are: BLACK WIDOW, DOCTOR STRANGE 2, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 3, BLACK PANTHER 2…Also, THE ETERNALS (directed by Chloe Zhao) may or may not be out by 2020, but hey, they’re immortals, they’re not known to rush.

And who knows? Maybe we’ll get the impeachment, and a SILK movie, and/or a Kamala Khan MS. MARVEL, and by 2020 we’ll VOTE ourselves outta this mess. Gotta have hope.
