A new site launched today calling itself #StarringJohnCho. What is it? As the name suggest:

#StarringJohnCho is a social movement that literally shows you what it would look like if today’s Hollywood blockbusters cast an Asian-American actor – specifically, John Cho – as their leading man.

Check out what it’s all about at @starringjohncho and in the meantime, imagine what the following movies would look like with an Asian American male–aka John Cho–in the lead:

  1. Okay, this is funny (I suppose) but if people want real change in the U.S. film industry, they have to get themselves into it so that the change that they want to see of actors of color like John Cho being first listed happens; simply doing what they do now online by shaming the industry isn’t the way one should go about it. Or, the can take the ethos of DIY and really start to do that.

You say that like it’s simple. A bunch of people of color trying to get into the entertainment industry won’t work when many of the gatekeepers are racially biased (whether intentional or not) and will make it difficult for people of color to land those roles and positions in acting, production, and business.

And DIY is happening thanks to the Internet and YouTube, but they’re still not taken as seriously as they could be by Hollywood.
