At the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing today, Senators Mazie Hirono of Hawaii and Kamala Harris of California (the two women of color on the Judiciary Committee, both Democrats) offered memorable moments in the astonishing spectacle concerning Supreme Court nominee Brett “I Like Beer” Kavanaugh and Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, who asserts that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her at a high school party. (I’ll update this piece soon with more commentary, after my brain pulls its blasted bits back together.)
Senator Harris with Dr. Ford:
Senator Hirono questions Chairman Grassley on the Republicans’ unusual choice to question Dr. Ford only through a surrogate, and advises Dr. Ford that “you are not alone.”:
Senator Hirono questions Judge Kavanaugh, who while stating, “I usually don’t like to speak about myself in this way,” evades all questions with rambling digressions into the details of his high school and college achievements.
Senator Harris with Judge Kavanaugh:
Harris and Kavanaugh’s exchange came at the end of the lengthy hearing, and closes with her asking him simply if he watched Dr. Ford’s testimony. He replied, “I did not.”
But we did. And he’d better.
