Better late than never. Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli’s 1988 anime feature MY NEIGHBOR TORORO is a genuine film classic but it’s only getting a theatrical release in China this month. In fact, this is the first Studio Ghibli film (their other classics include titles like SPIRITED AWAY and GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES) to receive a theatrical release in China.

A digitally remastered version of MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO is hitting theaters on December 14 and to mark the occasion, there’s a beautiful new Chinese poster for the movie courtesy of artist Huang Hai:

MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO tells the story of two sisters, Mei and Satsuki, who move to the country with their father where they encounter various nature spirits. The new poster shows that two girls making their way through either what appears to be tall fields of grass or is it actually Totoro’s fur?

Although this is the first Studio Ghibli to be officially released in China, there’s already a big Chinese fan base who have discovered the films through other means and if the release is a success, there are plans to release more from Studio Ghibli’s 20 other films.
