So I read this via Angry Asian Man, and for some reason it got my blood boiling. Probably because this segment by Steve Harvey was a low blow and cheap jokes at the expense of my fellow Asian brothers. Despite the fact that some groups of Asian men may not always agree with what I say, I will defend which ever group I feel is targeted and made fun of without provocation, and in this case Asian men are being emasculated for some shits and gigs. Come on, Steve Harvey stop with your desperate act to reclaim your lost fame. Anyways, I think Angry Asian Man summed it up pretty well by saying in his post:

Here’s how to blatantly shit on Asian men on nationally syndicated television. Thank you, Steve Harvey. The tiresome comedian/host kicked off Friday’s edition of the Steve Harvey Show with a segment highlighting and mocking a bunch of goofy, useless self-help books. Weird titles like Knitting With Dog Hair, How to Have Sex in the Woods… and, ahem, How to Date a White Woman: A Practical Guide for Asian Men.

The book which was used by Steve Harvey:  How to Date a White Woman: A Practical Guide for Asian Men, was written by an Asian man named Adam Quan and can be bought on Amazon. Reading the short blurb on Amazon about what the book is about, it seems all my nightmares about dating advice have just hit me all at once. The book is quite pathetic and I do not really understand why some guide on how to approach white women for Asian men even needs to be written – at the end of the day in any courting/relationship it is about chemistry, mutual respect and confidence. This is why I think all the stupid bullshit pick up artist (PUA) programs targeted at Asian men only makes Asian men appear incapable, not confident and sad cases in love. Anyways, here is the blurb, if you are curious:

Feel Confident about approaching attractive White women, avoid making irreversible blunders… ***** How to Date a White Woman, A Practical Guide For Asian Men ***** Written by an Asian with Asian men in mind within the context of a western society. Provided inside are the knowledge, framework and tools necessary for an Asian man to understand, to plan and to put into action the steps to successfully date a white woman.

However, Steve Harvey doesn’t really even focus on the book, but merely uses it as a decoy to laugh at Asian men, and poke fun at them whilst emasculating them. Here are the lines of his segment (via Angry Asian Man):

“That’s one page too!” Harvey says. “‘Excuse me, do you like Asian men?’ No. ‘Thank you.’ How to Date a Black Woman: A Practical Guide [for] Asian Men. Same thing. ‘You like Asian men?’ I don’t even like Chinese food. It don’t stay with you no time… I don’t eat what I can’t pronounce.”

I must say, I was pretty disappointed to see how the cameras focused in on some Asian women in the audience laughing at this trash. I mean, regardless of how I feel about some groups of Asian men, when they are being targeted and made fun of, I will defend them because at the end of the day, they are still all my brothers, no matter how much they hate me. That being said, this will only perpetrate certain stereotypes that Asian men are not sexually attractive. I love Asian men, I married one and I would put them at the top of the tree of attractiveness, but these types of segments does nothing for the cause, neither does toxic Asian masculinity, I might add.

And Steve Harvey, being a black man should understand the perils and discrimination which people of colour go through considering he is one himself. I doubt he will feel any guilt from this, because he does have his “comedian” reputation to rebuild after the Miss Universe debacle when he announced the winner as Miss Columbia, instead of Miss Philippines.

Oh well, let’s keep up the fight on Asian empowerment and continue to call out bullshit like this.
