Airbnb has cancelled a planned contest that would’ve invited winners to sleep over on the Great Wall of China after backlash to the idea.
The contest, entitled “Night at the Great Wall” was just announced last week as part of an effort to “bring Chinese culture to life”, but was cancelled after negative feedback from Chinese netizens.
Although some comments were supportive of the promotion, criticism included comments like “The Great Wall is a historical relic under protection, how can they let it be turned into a common guest house?!” and “So now even ancient relics can be rented to guests for a profit?”
Cancelling the event, Airbnb released a statement that said, in part: “We have made the decision to not move forward with this event and instead we are working on a range of other experiences and initiatives that showcase China as a destination and highlight how people-to-people travel can drive human connections”.
