The Emmy nominations were announced this morning recognizing the “best” in television. It’s nice to see Asians on the list, but clearly there’s more work needs to be done (where are all the Asian women?). You can see all the nominations here, but here’s a list of Asian nominees or shows in the major categories (series, acting, writing, directing) that featured a significant Asian presence:

  1. Asian women nominated for a 2017 Emmy:

Lisa Joy is the co-creator/writer for HBO’s Westworld, which was nominated for Best Drama Series and Best Writing (she co-wrote/created alongside her husband/writing partner). She’s Chinese and mixed-race. That’s big one I would say considering it’s one of HBO’s bigger shows.

Brown Girls webseries was nominated for an Emmy as well for Outstanding Short Form Comedy or Drama series. This is a big deal considering they have a development deal for this web series with HBO. The TV version of it isn’t even greenlit for production yet. Fatimah Asghar, the creator/writer is a woman of Pakistani descent and one of two of the main characters is South Asian.

Also outside of the women I listed, BD Wong was nominated too! He was nominated for his guest role on Mr. Robot as White Rose.

  2. Thanks, Jesss, BD is already on the list at the very bottom but good catch on Lisa Joy whom I’ll add. Didn’t include Brown Girls and some other noms outside of the main categories but thanks for pointing out.

  3. Props to BD!!!
